    Some notes on selecting LED lighting for warehouses

    When considering the use of LED's (Light Emitting Diodes) as an energy saving lighting technology in warehouses there are some key questions to ask:

    • Is the warehouse a clean or dusty environment? - This is important as some LED fittings can suffer from build up of debris on the back of the aluminium heat-sinks
    • How busy is the warehouse? - LED lighting can be automatically dimmed/switched in response to occupancy of the aisles
    • Does the warehouse have good access to daylight (via sky-panels in the roof etc.)? - like presence detection controls, LED lights can be programmed to automatically adjust in response to daylight
    • Is it difficult to access light fittings? - due to racking or heights the light fittings can be difficult to reach which means maintenance costs can be significant. LED lighting has a very long lifetime in comparison to other lighting technologies
    • Are there issues with existing dark areas? - LED lighting can be particularly suitable for warehouses as the light can be directed where required (between aisles and on sides of racking) and not wasted

    Replacement of metal halide or sodium lights with LED

    Typical industrial high bay or low bay lighting fixtures use HID (high intensity discharge) lamps - either high pressure sodium (SON) or metal halide (MH) - other types such as mercury vapour lamps are much less common. When replacing an outdated 250W or 400W sodium or metal halide lamp industrial lighting system with energy efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) the new fittings will typically replace the old HID fixtures on a 'one for one' basis.

    Considerations when changing HID lighting to LED

    The biggest consideration for changing a

    • 400W sodium or metal halide replacement by LED fittings - the LED output efficacy is approaching 130 lumen/watt *
    • The equivalent light output will be emitted in a different way - if moving from metal halide the light of an LED may seem washed out after replacement. Moving from sodium presents less of a challenge

    Leaving aside the vast increases in energy efficiency (and the reduction of lighting energy bills) - there are a number of other advantages to replacing metal halide and sodium with LED.

    • Automatic Controls - A replacement LED light system can be controlled automatically to further maximise energy efficiency. Automatic dimming and switching can be used to respond to daylight (via roof windows etc,) or presence detection (staff, forklift vehicles etc.). Typical 250W or 400W sodium or metal halide lamps cannot be dimmed in this way
    • Longer aintenance Costs - Due to obstructions or heights industrial high bay light fittings can be difficult to access - frequently requiring expensive hiring of scissor lift or cherry picker when changing lamps. Metal halide & sodium lamps can be rated anywhere from 8000-12000 hours - however the actual lifetime of the lamp may be much less due to working conditions.
    • LED lighting fixtures has a very long lifetime in comparison to other lamp technologies. Most LED fittings are rated for at least 50000 hours of use
    • Are there issues with existing dark areas? - LED lighting can be particularly suitable for warehouses as the light can be directed where required (between aisles and on sides of racking) and not wasted

    Most traditional HID light bulbs tend to dissipate heat from the front of the bulb, and out into the surrounding atmosphere.

    LED lights generate significantly less heat when compared to e.g. - a 400w SON or metal halide lamp. Not only do the LEDs generate less heat, but they also dissipate their thermal energy back into the mounting fixture.

    This can make thermal management a challenge in certain applications where the direction of heat dissipation becomes critical.

    Below are some rules of thumb when 400W sodium & metal halide low bay and high bay light fittings are swapped for LED

    Direct energy & cost savings when changing HID lights to LED

    A replacement LED lighting fixture is much more energy efficient than HID lighting - requiring less energy (for an equivalent light level) & costing less to run

    A 400W hi-bay replaced by a 200" LED hi-bay unit represents a xx% reduction (before any control savings) in power consumption. Over the lifetime of an LED hi-bay unit (50,000 hrs) it will consume 6,400kWh (at 10 p/kWh) costing £xxx If the light hadnt been changed then the HID would have consumed 24,000kWh costing £xxx. That’s £xxxx saved for each hi-bay replaced by an LED.

    Carbon savings when changing HID lights to LED

    A lower power consumption and energy usage naturally leads to a lower carbon footprint.

    A 400W metal halide hi-bay lamp replaced by a xxW LED hi-bay unit is a reduction of . Over the lifetime of the LED hi-bay unit (50,000 hrs) it will emit xxx tonnes of CO2. The metal halide equivalent, over the same period, will emit xxxx tonnes of CO2 (note that tonnes of carbon is a different calculation).

    Maintenance cost savings when changing HID lights to LED

    LED lighting will reduce your maintenance bill.

    Maintenance is not just the replacement cost of the lamp, it’s also the cost of both personnel and equipment needed to make the replacement. A 400W metal halide hi-bay lamp will cost, typically £16. Replacement will frequently require the cost of high access equipment hire (£120 / day) plus the cost of at least 2 qualified personnel for a couple of hours (another £40) without even considering any process down time to enable the replacement. With an LED hi-bay unit lasting over 3 times the average rated life the metal halide it is replacing the provable maintenance cost saving is in the region of £528 per hi-bay replaced by LED.
